Price Indices - November 2011

The four price indices of New Eden have been calculated for November 2011.  My apologies for failing to deliver the index blog for October.  For more detail on the indices, please refer to the Market Indices page on Evelopedia.

Prices of PI made products rise considerably in November and started doing so mid October, with another spike at the end of November.  The first spike coincides with a blog announcing player-owned customs offices and changes to import and export tax, while the other spike happens at the launch of Crucible.  Despite increased capacity of planetary links, these changes are bound to lead to higher production costs, which might in turn affect supply to some degree, at least in the short run.  The development of these prices should prove interesting to watch in the coming months.

The last price index blog mentioned a suicide ganking initiative undertaken by the Goons, aimed at reducing the supply of ice mined in Gallente high security space.  The average price of Blue Ice rose by 152% from September to November, while the price of Oxygen Isotopes rose by 124% in the same period.  The initial effect on traded volume was quite different, as Blue Ice quantity dropped by a whopping 80% from September to October while Oxygen Isotopes only fell by 22%.  Although high-sec suppliers of Blue Ice were largely driven out for the time being, Oxygen Isotopes were still being supplied from outside of high security space.  However, traded volume of Oxygen Isotopes fell by a further 46% from October to November, probably due to reduced demand as more starbase operators lost patience with the high prices and switched to starbase types that require different fuel.

PLEX prices rise by 13% from October to November, having risen by 7.9% the month before.  At its peak on November 15, the daily average reached 498 million ISK, which is an all-time high.  The spike may have been driven by speculation, with the rising price convincing more and more people to keep their stock or add to it.  In the end, the Crucible expansion burst the bubble as many sought to fund their purchases of  newly introduced items through PLEX sales, thus significantly increasing PLEX supply.  This dropped the price by 10% from November 28 to December 1.

The index values for November are:

The Third EVE Novel -  EVE: Templar One

From the mighty pen of Tony Gonzales…

   Dear Friends,

It is my great honor to present the latest addition to the EVE universe: EVE: Templar One, available in bookstores near you this January 3rd. This novel unveils the backstory to DUST 514, a tale about the first immortal soldiers of New Eden. It is also a sequel to EVE: The Empyrean Age. But don’t worry: If you haven’t had the chance to read that novel, you’ll still enjoy Templar One. For those who have, you'll see some familiar faces return in a much more human, personal story.

At its heart, Templar One about ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances. You’ll read about the rise of the first soldier who can die a thousand deaths on a battlefield, and the great lengths that individuals and factions will go to acquire this dark technology for themselves. There are some EVE prime fiction reveals as well, for those steeped in the rich lore of New Eden. You’ll learn more about the Sleepers, the Jove, and many of the mysteries that were born in the Empyrean Age.

The first immortal soldiers are by no means perfect. They’re prototypes, not the refined fighting machines you’ll become in DUST 514. Their flaws are what give them their souls, as they reflect back upon who they were versus what they’ve become. Their weapons and tactics are still very much rooted in what qualifies as “conventional warfare” for the era. They’ll need the support of orbital bombardments, surface-to-space anti-ship weapons, and armed dropships to fight their way in and out of their objectives.

You’ll also learn that this breed of immortals is very different from yours as capsuleers. Suffice to say that Templar One will provide the contrasting perspectives of killing from very far away, versus kicking in doors and clearing rooms with a vowrtech (you’ll find out what that is, don’t worry).

When the final page is turned, I suspect you’ll be eager to learn what happens next.

Bringing EVE to life through storytelling and world building has been one of my greatest joys. For the past six years, I’ve devoted myself to building this IP through the sheer power of her setting—hands down the most underutilized force in EVE. I walked the floors of conventions dreaming of the day when we might have a 30 foot tall poster of Tibus Heth or Empress Jamyl to compete with the larger-than-life icons of other IP’s like the Master Chief and Commander Sheppard. EVE’s story is so deep and offers so much to science fiction fans that it has every potential to reach those heights. It could take years, decades, or longer. But the fact remains that it’s possible. I can’t speak for anyone else, but I know that’s kept me inspired since 2003.

EVE: Templar One is a labor of love that began in 2009. For now, itis my last contribution to EVE’s fiction as I was amongst the casualties of the recent difficult times CCP endured. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it. My publishers and dev colleagues are excited for it, and I hope you are too.

Your support over the years has been overwhelming, and I’ll never forget it. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything.

   Fly safe, pilots.

The passing of the torch: The future of EVE

   CCP Zulu:

The past 18 months have been quite the ride. Since taking on the position of Senior Producer in the summer of 2010, EVE has gone through a lot of change.

From the Incursion expansion adding rich, cooperative PVE and recreating and reinventing the avatars in EVE with the critically acclaimed new character creator; to Incarna and the extraordinary circumstances that lead to player protests. And now back to Crucible with it‘s almost impossible number of improvements, fixes and goodness.

This has been an incredibly intense time. The EVE team here at CCP has certainly been pushed to the limit and beyond and we as a company learnt quite a few harsh lessons. It‘s been a tough time but I know we will use this as an opportunity to improve, to grow and to mature.

To ensure and facilitate that happening properly I‘ve decided to step down as Senior Producer and Jon Lander, previously the head of our Carbon Technology group, will take the reins while we transition the EVE project into a better and more efficient organization. Jon has been a player since 2005 and instrumental in improving our internal tools, processes and shared technology from a global standpoint as the Director of Carbon technology since 2009.

   CCP Unifex:

   Hi all.

It's a pleasure being here and I wanted to say a big ‘Thank you’ to Zulu for helping me into the hot seat and showing me the ropes over the last weeks. This is a big job and there is a lot to do. But before I dive into that, a bit about myself. I have been playing EVE since 2005, mainly PvP-ing across the map in anything from large scale fleet fights to small gang roaming. Recently, I’ve been having a lot of fun in NPC 0.0 doing the small gang thing and yes, even getting the odd killmail. My background before CCP was as a technical architect and a project manager. The chance to come and work for the company which had taken so much of my spare time was too much for me to say ‘No’ and so I have been in Iceland now for a little over two years.

As Zulu  has already mentioned, now is the time to improve the EVE. The task ahead of us in 2012 is not to be taken lightly. We are changing EVE’s internal project structure to bring it in line with a product that has nearly 200 people working on it and making sure that everyone is concentrating on delivering a game which has real value for our players. As well as changing the project organization, we will also be spending time on improving our internal tools, pipelines and processes to improve our efficiency and effectiveness for the future.

Finally, we will be concentrating on those features we already have in the game after 8 years of development. Yes, we will be iterating (it‘s not a dirty word) on those features which need some polish, balance, fixes and general love. The releases throughout 2012 will be an extension of the type of release we had with Crucible with the addition of a theme to help us scope and tie the work into a really compelling and coherent package. The first theme is going to be War and everyone is getting very excited about it.

I had some great meetings with the CSM when they were recently here in Iceland and hopefully you will see in the minutes, when they come out, that the future is looking pretty good for EVE, spaceships and you, our players. I will be trying to keep everyone updated on our progress as we go through 2012 and look forward to meeting many of you at Fanfest where, as well as all the great things you have come to expect, we will have something a little different and special for you.

In our hunger for exploration and love of space science, CCP will be launching each and every one of our subscribers who have a paying EVE account as of 23:59 GMT on December 31, 2011… into space itself. That’s right, the character names and images of every player character subscribed at the end of this year will be placed in an expertly crafted EVE Pod during Fanfest 2012. That pod will then be affixed to a high-altitude balloon during the event and released, reverse planetary bombardment style. Powered by the laws of physics and mysterious Terran technology, the spacefaring vessel will travel to altitudes exceeding 100,000 feet and into the realm of near space. A camera will record the voyage of all EVE capsuleers, united in one fleet for the first time, as they crest the curve of the planet. The gorgeous vistas should be a familiar sight for those who fly around in the EVE Universe on a regular basis.

Just a small token to say ‘thank you’ for being a part of our extended internet spaceship family as we stare down 2012 with a real sense of anticipation.”

I’m looking forward to the coming year, I hope you are too. It will be a tough time of change for us on the EVE project but we will be putting out some great releases in 2012, building on the really positive end of 2011.
